Filipino Catholics mark a decade of faith in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — When the Filipino Catholics of Utah gather December 2 for their first Mass with Bishop John C. Wester of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, they will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of their founding.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Catholic Foundation of Utah (CFU) celebrated a remarkable landmark Nov. 6 at a reception at the bishop’s residence. Outgoing CFU President Pieter I. Scholte announced that the fiscal year ending July 30, 2007, saw Foundation investment returns reach a record high of 14.13 percent.

WEST VALLEY CITY — Father Raynato "Rene" Rodillas is taking up a fourth language, now that he’s been assigned to Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in West Valley City. In addition to his native Tagalog, spoken in the Philippines, Fr. Rene, a member of the international Congregation of the Divine Word Priests and Brothers, speaks German and English, and is now studying Spanish.

Madeleine Choir School students celebrate Thanksgiving

SALT LAKE CITY — "We got ready for the Thanksgiving feast by churning butter, making headdresses, and painting turkeys," said Sam Brown, a kindergarten student at the Madeleine Choir School, Salt Lake City. "We made cornucopia place mats and vests out of paper bags. We colored them with crayons because they are picture stories. It’s lots of fun."

Bishop Wester appointed to lead migration committee, serve on CRS, CLINIC boards

SALT LAKE CITY — Bishop John C. Wester of the Diocese of Salt Lake City has been named chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Migration. He succeeds Bishop Gerald R. Barnes of San Bernardino, Calif. The position will not be Bishop Wester’s first experience with the committee. He had served previously as a committee member, and then as a consultant.

Bishop Wester makes a pastoral visit to HAFB

LAYTON — Bishop John C. Wester of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, made a pastoral visit to the Catholic community of Christ, Prince of Peace at Hill Air Force Base in Layton. Father David V. McGuire, chaplain for Hill Air Force Base, welcomed Bishop Wester to the base and gave him a tour of some of the bases facilities and sights.

John Colosimo named '3A Coach of the Year'

DRAPER — John Colosimo, Juan Diego Catholic High School vice principal and head football coach, was named the 3A Coach of the Year, by the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA). He was presented with the Distinguished Service Award Nov. 1, at a luncheon at Willow Creek Country Club.
