Bishop Wester appointed to lead migration committee, serve on CRS, CLINIC boards

SALT LAKE CITY — Bishop John C. Wester of the Diocese of Salt Lake City has been named chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Migration. He succeeds Bishop Gerald R. Barnes of San Bernardino, Calif. The position will not be Bishop Wester’s first experience with the committee. He had served previously as a committee member, and then as a consultant.

LAYTON — Bishop John C. Wester of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, made a pastoral visit to the Catholic community of Christ, Prince of Peace at Hill Air Force Base in Layton. Father David V. McGuire, chaplain for Hill Air Force Base, welcomed Bishop Wester to the base and gave him a tour of some of the bases facilities and sights.

DRAPER — John Colosimo, Juan Diego Catholic High School vice principal and head football coach, was named the 3A Coach of the Year, by the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA). He was presented with the Distinguished Service Award Nov. 1, at a luncheon at Willow Creek Country Club.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Rotary Club of Hispano-Latinos of Salt Lake City, in cooperation with the Murray Rotary Club Foundation, have begun their 2007 toy drive, many of the beneficiaries of which will be children and families served by Holy Cross Ministries in Park City, Wendover, and Salt Lake City. At a Nov. 8 meeting of Clinica Hispana and Rotary Club of Hispano-Latinos of Salt Lake, Dr. Cesar Diaz, president of Rotary Club of Hispano-Latinos of Salt Lake, got the ball rolling, setting dates for visits to schools and churches where parents will bring their children to meet Santa and receive gifts of toys and clothing.

SALT LAKE CITY — A recent national poll conducted by the Center for Applied Research indicates that only one-third of Catholics had heard of the U.S. bishops’ policies to prevent child sex abuse and respond to abuse allegations. The bishops of the Diocese of Salt Lake City have strongly supported the "Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People," published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
