In response to Utah Gov. Gary Herbert’s veto of HB76, the Concealed Weapon Carry Amendments, Bishop John C. Wester of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City has issued the following statement: “I am very grateful to Gov. Herbert for vetoing HB76. I think it was a prudent and wise decision because I believe that HB76 was a dangerous law that did away with what few safeguards we have in addressing gun proliferation in our country."

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City Bishop John C. Wester celebrated Mass on March 19 in the Cathedral of the Madeleine "to give thanks to Almighty God for the inauguration of the ministry of Pope Francis as Bishop of Rome and universal pastor," he said. "We pray that through the intercession of St. Joseph, the Holy Spirit will guide our father Francis as he leads us, calling us to greater fidelity in service, charity and truth."

Twenty years ago this fall, a group of 25 priests and I visited the Holy Land, which was part of our sabbatical program held at the North American College in Rome. This visit was the highlight of our sabbatical experience and the memory of our time in the land where Jesus walked lingers in my heart to this day.

DRAPER — The Juan Diego Catholic High School debate team won its third straight title in the 3A State Tournament at Weber State University March 8-9. Juan Diego also won the Region 10 debate title for the sixth year in a row.
