VATICAN RADIO -- In a press conference on Monday, Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), said “now is the time” to fix the nation’s broken immigration system.
Bishop John C. Wester of Salt Lake City, chair of the USCCB Communications Committee, also took part in the press conference. SALT LAKE CITY — As the United States Senate begins hearings on proposed comprehensive immigration reform legislation, Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB); Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, chairman of the USCCB Committee on Migration; and Bishop John C. The U.S. Senate immigration bill introduced on April 17 is a welcome start to a discussion that has been stalled on the federal level for many years. Our immigration system is broken. Because of this, children have been separated from their parents, workers abused, and women and children in particular face the horrors of human trafficking. I join my brothers in the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and many others throughout the country in commending the senators who brought forth this legislation, and I pray that all the members of Congress will work, in good faith, to craft a humane solution to this problem.

In 1952, Selma Jockisch debarked from a ship in New Orleans with her husband and 1-year-old daughter. They had spent two weeks crossing from Germany and were supposed to have docked in New York, but a hurricane drove them to New Orleans. The family had lost everything during World War II; both Jockisch’s husband and brother-in-law had spent years in Russian prison camps. A Catholic parish in Saint Louis sponsored their immigration to the United States.
