Lent is going by quickly! In just a short while we will be celebrating the great liturgies of Holy Week. One of those liturgies is the Chrism Mass. This ancient rite finds its origin in the early Church when, at the Easter Vigil, the bishop of the diocese blessed the chrism used to anoint the catechumens (elect). In time, this blessing of the oils was done separately at the Holy Thursday Mass, and after 1,000 years of this practice, in 1955 the Church instituted the Chrism Mass for the blessing of the oils, a Mass that is celebrated close to the Easter Triduum of Holy Week.

Fasting is meant to be a meaningful experience, not just a task we check off a list.

Overall, I am happy with the renewed liturgical rites the Church has put in place since Vatican II. The new liturgical books that began to appear in the late 1960s are far from perfect, though, and will always be in need of improvement and development. The kind of ongoing reform I espouse would slowly and carefully build on the rites we have been given.
