Your presence in the Diocese of Salt Lake City has meant so much to the Knights of Columbus of Utah and, by extension, to all those we serve.
We welcomed you into our order in Utah, and your presence with us inspired men to join the Knights. By being such a strong supporter of the Knights and our mission, coupled with your deep love for those in need, it was easier to attract even more men to join our ranks.

Some of the things I will remember and appreciate about Bishop Wester’s eight years of episcopal ministry “in this local vineyard” are 1) the wonderful “face” he was able to put onto the Roman Catholic Church in Utah and the articulate spokesperson he has been; 2) his gifts, which I was able to witness first hand as Vicar for Clergy, of compassionate counseling and discernment that he brought to his relationship with his fellow priests; 3) the power and elegance he brought to his preaching; and 4) his conviction and dedication to the immigrant, marginalized and less fortunate, even when his being a champion for the voiceless and his support of social justice brought him criticism and disdain.

The Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict are profoundly grateful for Archbishop Wester’s service to the people of the Diocese of Salt Lake City.

It is certainly not a surprise to anyone who knows Bishop Wester that a promotion was inevitable. His spirituality, courage, work ethic and warm pastoral style are a combination to make him a wise choice to be noticed and elevated to a more prominent role in the Catholic Church. While we are sad to “lose” him, we must just appreciate the fact that we had eight years to be led by him and that he, in turn, learned to love both the people of Utah and our state’s spectacular geography.

There is one distinctive place in Tooele where Archbishop Wester’s influence will stand the test of time and forever change hearts and minds. Specifically, Saint Marguerite Catholic School is grateful to Archbishop Wester for consecrating the two phases of our newly constructed school, on Aug. 17, 2011 and Oct. 30, 2012, respectively.

It has been a pleasure, blessing, and honor to work with Archbishop Wester. His commitment to the social mission of the church and his ability to promote Catholic teaching on controversial topics in a pastoral manner has been inspiring and instructive for me, and I hope for many of my fellow Catholics. Archbishop Wester has never shied away from saying what is unpopular so long as it has also been the right thing to do. The Diocese of Salt Lake City served as a strong voice for immigrants, the homeless, the imprisoned, the marginalized, and many others during Archbishop’s Wester tenure, and we will miss his clear example of how to truly abide in Christ.
