Bernice Maher Mooney, who served for many years as the archivist for the Diocese of Salt Lake City and wrote three books about Catholic Utah, died Dec. 22, 2013. She was 85.

As the 2014 Legislative session looms, Gov. Gary Herbert and legislators will consider whether to expand Medicaid in the state to individuals living at less than 138 percent of the federal poverty level (i.e. making roughly $16,000 or less per year). Politicians and pundits have debated the issue for months, carefully considering economics, political convictions, and policy implications.

During the century before Father Edward Kelly established the first Catholic parish in Utah in 1866, there was an almost constant presence of Catholics in the region. It was a transient population of missionaries, explorers, soldiers, trappers and traders. Their contribution to Utah history, though, was not insignificant, and in fact one of their enterprises – the Old Spanish Trail – placed Utah at the center of an international commercial network that brought trade goods from California and even China to Santa Fe and, via the Santa Fe Trail, to St. Louis and to markets in the East.

The 2nd Annual Christmas Pageant, written and directed by Saint George Parish’s parochial vicar Father Tai Nguyen, was presented Dec. 22 in Kuzy Hall by the youth of the parish. The pageant was narrated by several adult parishioners. Costumes were courtesy of parishioner Barbara Bushey.
