Vice Principal teaches students about Saint Paul

SALT LAKE CITY — St. Paul came to life at Saint Vincent de Paul School during Catholic Schools Week Jan. 26-30. Vice Principal Gary Green dressed up as St. Paul and spread Christianity far and wide.

Each day, Green had a different lesson to teach about St. Paul. He visited every classroom kindergarten through eighth grade, and told stories reflecting on the works of this great saint.

On Monday, Green spoke about St. Paul’s persecution of Christians, his conversion, and his visit with St. Peter in Jerusalem. He taught the younger students a song about Jesus which they sang each day when St. Paul visited them. The refrain was, "You’re the way, you’re the truth, you’re the light, we will follow."

On Tuesday, he taught about the first and second missionary journeys. Bringing a map into each classroom, Green reviewed St. Paul’s journeys with a large map that traced the routes. He spoke about events on the journeys including the changing of his name from Saul to Paul, his arrest in Philippi, adventures in Ephesus with angry silversmiths, and other threatening situations St. Paul encountered while spreading the Gospel. Green, as St. Paul asked the students why St. Paul would keep risking his life to preach. The students knew the answer: St. Paul did it because doing God’s will was worth the risk.

On Wednesday, Green talked about St. Paul’s third and fourth journeys, including his arrest in Jerusalem, imprisonment for two years, being shipwrecked on Malta, the continuation of his preaching even while under house arrest in Rome, and his eventual martyrdom. Green spoke about the 14 epistles from the New Testament and pointed out who St. Paul was writing to in many cases. Green read a passage or two from Paul’s epistles to each class.

Since the visits, students often ask Green how St. Paul is doing. We are glad that the students’ time with St. Paul was memorable.
