SALT LAKE CITY — Many athletes and spectators on both sides of the Juan Diego Catholic High School/Judge Memorial Catholic High School rivalry relish the opportunity to compete multiple times a year. Although no longer region foes, many coaches hope to continue the rivalry, even if just in the preseason.

There are, however, exceptions to every rule. The annual football game will not be played this fall, to the disappointment of many, including Judge head football coach James Cordova.

"We are very disappointed that the game will not be played," Cordova said. "This is a rivalry that has great potential to continue to grow."

For Juan Diego head football coach John Colosimo, the issue was a "scheduling conflict," he said. "We had to schedule games as they became available and that’s what we did."

Players on both sides may be the most upset, with many saying they hope the games can continue in the near future.

"I grew up with the games between the two schools and it is always a great atmosphere," said Judge junior Henry Garcia.

Dom Colosimo, a junior at Juan Diego, was equally saddened. "I’ve been going to or been part of JD–Judge games since I was young, so yes, I will miss them," he said.

"It is important to remember that this rivalry isn’t dead, but on a temporary hiatus, "said Judge Principal Rick Bartman. "The JD–Judge games, in all sports, are an important part of our larger community. For Judge, it is a priority to continue that opportunity for our entire community to gather and support high school athletics."
