SALT LAKE CITY — Mason Keller is a junior at Highland High School and a member of Saint Ambrose Parish. He has been a three-year varsity baseball and football player, and a two-year varsity quarterback.

"I love baseball," said Keller. "I started playing T-ball when I was 8 years old, and the played Little League baseball. I play second base now. I was just recently moved there from playing catcher.

"I liked playing catcher because you get the ball the whole game," said Keller. "You are pretty much in charge of the game.

"I also started playing football when I was 8 years old," said Keller. "I play quarterback in football. As quarterback, you plan the plays, control the emotions, calm the team down, and know where everybody on the field is at all times. You have to know what everybody is doing at all times, especially what your defense is doing."

This past April, Keller traveled to Las Vegas, Nev., with his Highland High School team to play in the Bishop Gorman Tournament. Highland has a pretty good baseball team and we won a game."

Keller also plays summer ball, and plays in many different positions. He said he gets moved around to wherever he is needed.

Keller works out to stay in shape every fourth period at Highland. He does weight training for his whole body. He practices batting with his team every chance he gets, but that is not much because they have games almost every day.

The season began in March and will end the end of May. They play other 4A teams in the Salt Lake City area, but this year they will also play in Idaho.

"My faith is a big part of my life," said Keller. "It definitely helps me out. I always pray before I play baseball or football. I have a ritual of doing the sign of the cross before I play which brings me closer to God. It helps me feel centered."
