HOLLADAY — "I bet you can’t" was the challenge from seventh grade teacher Deborah Ferree that launched a reading marathon at Holladay’s St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Elementary School. Coupled with the Scholastic Book Club, seventh-graders turned off the TV and put away the PlayStations to read over 100 books in only four weeks as part of Scholastic’s Classroom Cares Program. "Success at reaching the 100-book milestone triggers a donation by Scholastic Books," explains Ferree. In honor of my student’s achievement, Scholastic will donate 100 books to low-income families. "There is a real sense of empowerment among the students knowing they are giving the joy of reading to children in need" said Ferree.

Bolstered by success in the Classrooms Care Program and fueled by a desire to help those closer to home, the seventh-graders decided to initiate their own community service project. They matched the 100 book donation by Scholastic and elected to donate 100 new books to Salt Lake City’s Road Home, a service organization that assists the homeless. In addition, the seventh-graders have been collecting warm blankets, coats, clothing and hygiene items and will deliver these items along with their new books to the Road Home in December, just in time for Christmas. "The joy of reading transcends economic and social barriers," said Ferree. "These students made a difference on their own and provided an opportunity for the less fortunate. I am proud of them for taking their idea one step further and for a job well done."
