Second-graders become mentors to newborns

BOUNTIFUL — Nicole Beins’ second grade class is launching a new recruitment program for Saint Olaf Catholic School, provided by the National Catholic Educational Association called Bear-ly Recruiting. This program allows contact with prospective students from baptism to pre-school or kindergarten enrollment.

Beginning this year, a second grader will send a congratulations card with a personalized message to each newly baptized baby at Saint Olaf Parish. In addition, the baby will be sent a teddy bear magnet with the inscription’ Catholic School Class of 2013. The second grader will welcome the new baby to the parish and become the school "sponsor" for the child.

This responsibility will continue every year with the same student sending an annual birthday card until the baptized child reaches age 4.

At that time the same student who signed the original baptism card will send a coloring book and an invitation to the Bear-ly Recruited Baby to a special program at the school where registration will be encouraged.

The student who sent the newly baptized baby a personalized message will be a sixth grader when the infant is 4 years old. The sixth grader will serve as a Big Brother/Big Sister to the special 4-year old for the day for a tour of the school and introductions to the other students, teachers, and staff.

Hopefully this annual contact and personal communication will help generate even more interest and commitment for potential students of Saint Olaf School.

The students are very excited about this program and having ownership of a new student, and someone for whom to be responsible. They already show responsibility by helping kindergarten students. They seem to already have a relationship with the newly baptized babies even though they have not met them.
