During Lent, cathedral is offering series on the Eucharist

SALT LAKE CITY — During Lent, the Cathedral of the Madeleine will host a seven-week series, “Jesus and the Eucharist,” which also will serve as part of the parish Eucharistic Revival.

“During this time of Eucharistic Revival, Jesus is inviting us to encounter him in our life stories,” said Tom Schiereck, the cathedral parishioner who will be guiding the series. “So it is really important that people focus on the Eucharist.”

Each session will touch on themes such as “The Story of the Eucharist” and “Bread for the Journey.”

A survey by the Pew Research Center showed that nearly 70 percent of Catholics believe the Eucharist is merely symbolic rather than the True Presence of Christ, as the Church teaches. Schiereck says the goal of offering the series “is to reinvigorate the faith at an individual level and in a group level.”

The series has another purpose: “To help people be happy,  to be able to be productive; and I think one of the best ways to do that is through the Catholic faith – you go to church and these things start flowing naturally,” Schiereck said.

“Together, we’ll explore the story of salvation as told through Scripture, fulfilled in the death and resurrection of Jesus, and lived out in the Church and the sacraments – especially the Eucharist,” he added.

WHEN: Tuesdays, Feb. 13 to March 26 at 6:30 p.m. each night

WHERE: In the Cathedral of the Madeleine’s Bishop Glass room, 309 E. South Temple, SLC

Everyone 18 years old and older is invited to attend.
