The Utah Knights of Columbus are participating in the Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose – One Life, One Rose Program, which involves carrying six silver roses from Ontario, Canada, through the United States to Monterrey, Mexico, where they will be displayed at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The program began in 1960 with one rose to pay tribute to our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. In 2001, Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson expanded the program by beginning the “Running of the Rose.”
This year, starting in April, six roses began travel simultaneously through 53 states and provinces before entering Mexico for the final leg of the pilgrimage to Monterrey.
“The ‘Running of the Rose’ is a perfect program for the Knights of Columbus,” said Anderson in a press release. “Through it we honor not only Our Lady of Guadalupe and express the unity of the Order, but we also reaffirm the Order’s dedication to the sanctity of human life. It is to the Blessed Mother that we turn in prayer as we work to end the culture of death that grips our society. As we think in terms of ‘One Life, One Rose,’ it is most appropriate that we turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe who made known her will through Juan Diego and the ‘Miracle of the Roses.’”
In Utah, the rose will be displayed at more than 30 parishes during the next week. Some of these parishes will conduct a special service, such as the Divine Mercy chaplet that was prayed at Saint John the Baptist Church at which the rose was displayed during the Sept. 19 Diocese of Salt Lake City Pastoral Congress.
