SALT LAKE CITY — Judge Memorial Catholic High School and Saint Mary of the Wasatch High School Student and Alumni Art Show 2014 will be held at Evergreen Framing Co. & Art Gallery March 25.

The public is invited to browse the original art work of current art students, alumni, faculty and staff that will be on display including digital, pottery, photography, sculpture and fine art. During the event, the Judge Memorial jazz band will perform, students in creative writing and some from the literary magazine will read poetry and the Epicurean Club will provide artistically designed appetizers.

"It’s nice to have all aspects of art involved in the evening show," said Tamara Beck, art show coordinator. "The art show is an event that allows current Judge Memorial students an opportunity to display their works and learn what it takes to be a part of a show."

Evergreen Framing Co. & Art Gallery has been involved in the annual art show for the past five years, said Kelly Omana, co-owner with her husband Majid Omana. They are members of Saint Ambrose Parish and their children attended Judge Memorial.

"The art show is a fun event that seems to grow each year," Kelly Omana said. "As people find out about it, they want to become more involved. It’s good that the art is shown outside the school in an art gallery so the students can learn the process of submitting artwork and what it takes to sell their pieces. They don’t always learn everything in one night; they learn from experience. For example a piece will come in without a wire, and a gallery can’t hang it without a wire. It’s an educational process and a fun evening of music, art and food. It’s also a way to raise money for the art department."

Tom Bettin, Judge Memorial art teacher, will again donate a piece of art for the show.

"Tom donated a piece of his pottery last year and we held a raffle to raise money for the art department; some artists will also sell their work and a percentage will go back to the art department," said Omana, adding that 20 percent of the gallery sales from the event will also go to Judge Memorial.

The art show seeks new artists each year and it is a good experience for the students to see that some of the alumni have succeeded in the art business, said Omana.

Evergreen Framing Co. & Gallery was established in 1985 and exhibits primarily Utah artists in a variety of subjects, styles and mediums; including oils, pottery, photography and glass, said Omana. They also offer a full-service custom frame shop.

"We recently sent an employee to the Judge Memorial art department to talk to the students about proper framing," said Omana. "A lot of people don’t realize there is more to framing than buying a frame and putting a piece into it. Framing involves using archival supplies to preserve the piece, different kinds of glass, mat boards, mounting materials and when it is appropriate to use them. These are things people who scrapbook need to know as well."

Submission deadline for the JMCHS and St. Mary of the Wasatch Annual Alumni and Student Art Show ’14 is March 10. The event is March 25 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Evergreen Framing Co. & Art Gallery, 3295 South 2000 East, SLC. For information, contact Tamara Beck 801-517-2132.
