WEST JORDAN — Judge James B. Kilby, 87, died Feb. 2.

Kilby was born July 7, 1921, to James and Winifred Kilby in Butte, Mont. He graduated from Murray High School in 1939. He married Selma Rasmussen Dec. 8, 1941. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. In 1945, Jim and Selma bought the Welcome Inn Café and ran it until 1971. In 1961, Kilby was appointed as the Park City Precinct Justice of the Peace for Summit County and held that position until he retired in 1987. He also served on the Park City School Board, was a charter member of the Summit County Planning Commission and the Snyderville Basin Sewer District Board, and served as a Park City judge. Kilby was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid golfer.

He is survived by his wife; two children, Lisa (Keith) Tumelson, and Larry (Kathleen) Kilby; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Burial was in the West Jordan City Cemetery.
