"It’s a Grand Celebration!" was this year’s theme for Blessed Sacrament Catholic School’s Grandparents’ & Grandfriends’ Day held Sept. 22. Approximately 300 grandparents and grandfriends attended this third annual event. The grandparents were able to attend All School Mass, tour the school and spend time in the classrooms, and eat lunch with their grandchildren. The gym was transformed into a patriotic sea of red, white and blue. The school choir, under the direction of Laura Thomas, entertained the visitors until the tours began.

Eleanore Jorgensen, grandparent of 4th-grader Hannah Jorgensen, enjoyed her time at the school, "It was wonderful, inspirational," she said.

Marcy Mullholand, art teacher, had all students create special bookmarkers to present to their grandparent or grandfriend during their visit to the school.

The day is aside to honor the grandparents of the students and to build community. Principal Matthew DeVoll said, "It’s great to see the connection between the grandchild and the grandparent when they smile at each other. This was a nice celebration to build community and to witness the special interaction between the generations."

Grandparents traveled from as far away as Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, California, and Germany.

Joan O’Hare, grandparent of 6th-grader Conor Mullholand, has attended several grandparent day celebrations over the past years, "It was fun. The food was phenomenal. It was well organized. I especially liked going from class to class to see what Conor does during the day." he said.

The "Grand Celebration" coincided with the 25th anniversary of the school’s founding.
