Donald J. Hoffman, 89, passed away peacefully at Castleview Hospital on September 19, 2018. Born July 10, 1929 in Lansing, Ill. to John and Eva Scheidt Hoffman, Don was the seventh child in a family of 10 kids and was raised in Crown Point, Ind. He married his high school sweetheart, Janet Elaine Chittum, on October 23, 1948 and moved to Salt Lake City with Jan’s family. They were blessed with five boys and one girl.

Don was a sergeant major in the Army Reserves and retired with 26 years of service. He left a career in the banking industry in 1968 to run the Hoffman’s Castle Valley Ranch. The family later moved to Price, and he and Jan opened Hoffman’s Hard Hat Furniture and Appliance before retiring several years later. Don also worked as the Grand County economic development director.

In 1999, Don had a massive stroke that affected his speech, and for the next 19 years was only able to communicate through writing. In 2008, he had a double-aorta aneurysm that he survived.

Don was a member of the Tune Tenders barbershop quartet and sang in the choir at the Cathedral of the Madeline. He was a member of Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish, the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and Price Elks Lodge#1550, along with president of the Price Kiwanis Club. He served on many county committees and boards.

Don fell on September 17 and broke his hip. He died peacefully two days later, surrounded by his loving family, and took his last breath right after receiving Last Rites.

Don is survived by his sons: David (Tammy) Hoffman of Price; Tim (Lisa) Hoffman of Wheat Ridge, Colo.; and Paul (Tami) Hoffman of Price; daughter Sue (John) Douros of Price; daughter-in-law Diane Anderson Hoffman of Moab; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; sisters Marcella and Rosie; and a brother, Francis Hoffman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Chittum Hoffman; sons Danny and Ken Hoffman; granddaughters Hanna Hoffman and Billy Gentry Brown; both parents; four brothers and two sisters.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Heirloom Inn in Price for the wonderful care and love shown to our dad. Also to Dr. Shane Gagon for his medical help over the years and to the staff at Castleview Hospital.

A funeral Mass was celebrated September 25, 2018 at Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church; committal was at Price City Cemetery.
