HURRICANE — Oct. 19 was a big day for Hurricane Catholics. Father Eleazar Silva, parochial vicar of Saint George Parish, celebrated the first Mass in Hurricane for some 50 Catholics who are planning to build their own church there in three years.

The Mass was held at the American Legion Hall, where SCAP services are held every first and third Sunday.

The hall is also a dance studio and a Weight Watcher’s meeting place.

"This is the first time I’ve celebrated Mass in front of a mirror – didn’t think I’d look so green in my vestments," said Fr. Silva referring to the mirrors in the hall.

Fr. Silva stressed the great honor he felt by celebrating the first Mass for Hurricane’s Catholics.

"We are born with happiness in being here with the Lord and will help build something beautiful in your community," he said.

Deacon Mark Bourget assisted Fr. Silva during Mass.

Afterwards, parishioners had a discussion about their thrift store and future church along with some refreshments.
