SALT LAKE CITY — The Catholic Woman’s League Fall Tapestry luncheon this year will benefit the parishes of Our Lady of Lourdes in Salt Lake City and Saint Therese of the Child Jesus in Midvale.
Our Lady of Lourdes Parish will use the funds to enhance the existing sound system, said Father J.J. Schwall, pastor.
“We have a very old system and it’s in need of an upgrade so that we can combine our choir and address the needs of the growing older population that we have in the parish – many more have hearing aids and they have a very difficult time hearing; it’s not just the volume but the quality, also,” Fr. Schwall said.
In addition to purchasing a sound board and equipment to allow volume adjustments, Fr. Schwall said he hopes to be able to obtain devices that will act as auxiliary hearing aids for people attending Mass who have severe hearing problems.
St. Therese of the Child Jesus Parish offers a number of programs that help the poor in the Midvale community, which is the reason the Catholic Woman’s League board of directors voted to fund them this year, said Holly Porter, chairperson of the luncheon committee and president-elect of the organization.
Beneficiaries of the luncheon must be local nonprofits that submit applications for funding each year. The applications are voted on by board members, who choose two each year.
The luncheon is the CWL’s largest yearly event; they also host an annual membership tea.
Porter said she hopes to draw 300 people to the luncheon, and she urges those who wish to attend to bring their friends. This year, the fashion show will feature clothing provided by Chico’s.
“I think that the women getting together and feeling that they’re part of something bigger than themselves is really what draws them,” said Porter, who has been involved with the CWL for 10 years, and on the board for the last three years.
“I love the women that I serve with on the league,” she said. “We all work for the common goal to help the community at large, which I just love to be part of.”
