Young adults gather again at cathedral for prayer

SALT LAKE CITY – As with many other gatherings, due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Christ in the City program was suspended for some months, but on Sept. 2 the Cathedral of the Madeleine once again welcomed the participants.

Christ in the City is a Catholic program for young adults to gather for prayer, music, the Sacrament of Reconciliation and community. 

The program, which takes place on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the cathedral, is open to all Catholic young adults in the Salt Lake City area.

During the most recent gathering, the young adults arrived wearing a face covering; they sanitized their hands before entering the cathedral. They were welcomed by Daniel Staton, the cathedral’s pastoral associate who is in charge of the Youth and Young Adult Ministry.

The evening started with the Eucharistic Adoration led by Fr. Dominic Sternhagen, parochial vicar of the cathedral.

For an hour, the young adults knelt in prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Later, a small social gathering took place.

“I like to come here with other fellow young adults,” said Christina Bergs, a University of Utah student who participated in the Adoration. “I am happy that once more we can get together as Catholics, but, of course, following all the safety and healthy measurements. ... I missed these times.”
