Trappist Fr. Malachy Flaherty, the last monk to come from Kentucky to open Our Lady of the Holy Trinity monastery in Huntsville, has died.
Dom Malachy Flaherty was born in 1924 in Bloomfield, Ky. He entered Gethsemani monastery in 1943. He was a founder of Holy Trinity in 1947, where he made his solemn profession in 1949. He was ordained a priest in 1960. Dom Malachy was abbot of Holy Trinity from 1983 to 1995. At the time of his death he was 94 years old, had been in monastic vows for 72 years and 58 years a priest.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. at the chapel at St. Joseph’s Villa, 451 E. Bishop Federal Lane, SLC, on Wednesday, April 25. Viewing will be beforehand at 12:30 p.m. Burial will follow at the Huntsville Monastery Cemetery.
