OGDEN — After a long break during the pandemic, the youth and young adult groups at St. Joseph Parish in Ogden have returned with a full calendar of activities over the next couple of months to which all youth and young adults of the diocese are invited.
The St. Joseph Parish youth group has been small in the past, but parish leaders are working to expand it and to reach out to more young people in the parish and the diocese, coordinator Grace Huegel said. The group, open to youth ages 11 to 18, meets for their activities every other Friday at 7 p.m., with occasional other evenings or Saturdays. In September they participated in Adoration, Confession and the Mass, an event to pray the rosary and celebrate with family and friends, a Bible study and a game night.
This next month they plan to gather for a rosary conversation on Oct. 7, Adoration and socializing on Oct. 21, an All-Saints Day conversation Nov. 4, and prayer and socializing on Nov. 18. All activities will begin at 7 p.m.
The young adult group for ages 18 to 39 is a new ministry in the parish.
“We have a sizeable young adult population the parish,” Huegel said. “There are people in that population who have been craving other events because it gets hard when you get out of K-to-12 education to find other Catholics, especially if you have never left the Catholic school circle. In an area where maybe Catholicism isn’t the most prevalent thing in the world, it offers young adults an opportunity to commune with other people who share the same faith in events that range from specifically Catholic events such as Adoration and a guest lecture, but also go to more social activities such as bowling or a Thanksgiving potluck.”
At St. Joseph’s, the young adult group has met for activities every other Saturday at 6 p.m., gathering for Eucharistic adoration, praise and worship, and a guest lecture. For another recent activity, they enjoyed s’mores, friends, a bonfire and music.
On Oct. 8 they will gather for Eucharistic Adoration, praise and worship and a guest lecture on the Sacred Heart of Jesus, presented by Scott Anthony. A bowling night is planned for Oct. 22. On Nov. 5, they will again meet for Eucharistic Adoration, praise and worship and a guest lecture with Chris Kennedy. A Thanksgiving potluck is planned for Nov. 19.
