SALT LAKE CITY — The performing arts department at Judge Memorial Catholic High School continues to excel, with groups from both the drama and music departments competing well at region and state competitions.

The jazz band received superior ratings at the recent jazz band region festival. They performed at Murray High School and received an overall Excellent rating on March 22.

Jazz Band members are Cooper Williford, Araxan Oliveras, Bodee Chell, Kevin Yao, Rowan Burris, Tyler Bissett, Peter Larrabee and Dominic Blake. Because of their performance, they became one of around 45 school bands in the entire state, and only one of two in the region, to advance to the upcoming state jazz festival.

Another success came with the concert choir, which also received Superior ratings in its regional festival and also advanced to the state competition, which took place on May 10-11 at Libby Gardner Hall in Salt Lake City.

The chamber orchestra and concert band received Excellent ratings at the chamber orchestra region festival and concert band region festival, respectively.

Not to be outdone, the drama department received first place overall in region competition on March 28. Though they won as a group, there were many individual highlights from the competition.

In Classical Scenes, Sophie Davies and Gillian Mozdy got first place overall. For One-Acts, Natalie Risse received “Best Supporting Actress.” In Pantomime, Meaghan Madlena and Kat Ward received third place overall. Katelynn Smith placed fifth overall in Musical Theatre, while Suzy Trujillo was fifth overall for Humorous Monologues.

The following people received a Superior rating and advanced to state: Max Brown and Joseph Izampuye (Musical Theatre), Natalie Risse (Humorous Monologues), Georgia Stockham, Penelope Richardson and Maggie Condas (Dramatic Monologues), Celi Blake and Anika Weaver, Milo Hohmann and Alex Moffat, as well as Bella Ingham and Katelynn Smith (Contemporary Scenes), Lili Anderson and Tiffany Hingley as well as Joseph Izampuye and Jack Libin (Classical Scenes).

The arts department at Judge has always been strong, and this year proved no exception to that tradition.
