SALT LAKE CITY — The diocesan young adult summer retreat hosted by the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry will be a day of recollection and spiritual repose for Catholics aged 18 to 39.

“The retreat will be focusing on spirituality – not in a specific one, on spirituality as a whole,” said Junuee Castro, director of the diocesan Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry. “We will have spaces to share, to reflect internally and in community, we will pray together, we will share experiences.”

The retreat master is Fr. Charles Johnson O.P., director of Vocations for the Order of Preachers of the Southern Dominican Province, and a resource person for the Congar Institute, who will be arriving from Louisiana.

Prior to becoming vocations director,  Fr. Johnson served for three years as a chaplain at Tulane University in New Orleans and as director of the Tulane Catholic Center. Much of his ministry has been in mission to Latin America, including five years in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador in South America, and five years serving the indigenous population in Guatemala.

His theological studies include a Master of Arts degree from Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas and a Master of Divinity degree from Mundelein Seminary in Chicago.

Fr. Johnson will serve as a spiritual guidance director for all the young adults at the retreat who are interested, Castro said.

“Young adults are searching for time to reflect, to be able to get stronger and gain strength. This is an opportunity to reflect and to have time and to have spiritual guidance,” she said.

This retreat will be conducted in English; a similar retreat in Spanish was held in May. However, Fr. Johnson also speaks Spanish, so young adults who speak Spanish will be able to participate in this retreat.

“Everyone is invited. This is a time for the young adults to get together and spend a good time with spiritual repose,” said Castro.

U.S. Bishops’ Prayer for Young Adults

Gracious and Loving God,

Help these young men and women to be a light for all the world to see,

in all the places they live and work. Let their light shine for all peoples:

for their families,

for their church communities,

for their cultures and societies,

for the economic and political systems,

for the whole world.

Coming into the room where the disciples were gathered after the resurrection,

Jesus, your son, said: “Peace be with you!” (Jn 20:21).

Make these men and women bearers of Christ’s peace.

“Blessed are the peacemakers,

Teach them the meaning of what was said on the mountain:

for they shall be called sons and daughters of God” (cf. Mt 5:9).

Send them, Father, as you sent your son:

to free their brothers and sisters from fear and sin.

We ask this of you, in Christ’s name. Amen.
