Bishop Solis to address young adults group
SALT LAKE CITY — The Cathedral of the Madeleine’s Young Adult Ministry will host Bishop Oscar A. Solis as the speaker for their February Christ in the City On Tap series.
The Young Adult Ministry began at the cathedral about two years ago. Marci Hankins, one of the group’s facilitators, had moved to Utah for a job and found that ministry to people ages 21 to 35 was lacking, except for the St. Catherine of Siena Newman Center campus ministry. Young adults who are out of school face different challenges than those in college, she said, so she and a friend approached the cathedral staff about beginning a ministry for their age group.
They wanted to “build a community of young adults who are active in their faith” and provide a place for “young adults trying to figure out who we are, and to have those conversations about where we’re going and what’s God’s path for us,” she said.
The Young Adult Ministry now meets every Wednesday. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is offered at the Cathedral of the Madeleine the first Wednesday of the month; a social hour follows.
The Eucharistic Adoration is meant to provide young adults an opportunity to build or continue a relationship with the Lord, as they are called to do as Christians, said Ali Martinez, the cathedral’s youth and young adult minister. The social time afterward can help build relationships among young adult Catholic adults in the area, she said.
The Christ in the City On Tap speaker series also is meant to draw people into a relationship with Christ, but in a little bit different way, with speakers on different theological topics every month, Martinez said.
The diocesan Office of Youth and Young Adults helps coordinate these two Christ in the City events.
The On Tap event, which meets at Wasatch Brew Pub, allows discussion and a way to share the faith, Martinez said, adding that she is excited that Bishop Solis will be the speaker on Feb. 20 because young adults don’t often have the opportunity to interact with the bishop.
The speaker series is meant to help people better understand the Catholic point of view and how Catholic teaching applies to issues, Hankins said.
Bishop Solis will speak about immigrants and refugees, particularly in the context of the current political climate and his experiences as an immigrant, Hankins said.
“We thought that would be a really powerful thing for him to speak about” because as the head of the diocese he can explain the Catholic view of immigrants and refugees as a dignity of human life issue, she said.
Previous On Tap speakers have included Dominican Father Marcin Szmanski, director of religious education at the Newman Center; and Heather Williams, a cathedral parishioner who is an iconographer.
On the second and fourth Wednesdays, the cathedral’s Young Adult Ministry meets for informal events such as a social hour or hiking.
Most of those who attend the activities are members of the cathedral parish or St. Catherine of Siena Newman Center and are in the work force, Martinez said, but they welcome all Catholics ages 21 to 35.
