Indianapolis — A group of 11 orders of Catholic women religious in Indiana and Michigan who invest in hotel chains to affect social change is collaborating with state and local officials to curb human trafficking during festivities leading up to the Feb. 5 Super Bowl in Indianapolis. Incidents of human trafficking – or modern-day slavery – tend to spike alongside major sporting events like the Olympics, the World Cup and the Super Bowl to meet the high demand for commercial sex.

SALT LAKE CITY — Following up on training for principals at the end of last school year, Utah Catholic Schools brought together teachers and counselors for a multicultural workshop led by Dr. Arturo Chávez, president and chief executive officer of MACC, the Mexican American Catholic College in San Antonio, Texas.

Saint Olaf altar servers

BOUNTIFUL — When Father Rene Rodillas became administrator of Saint Olaf Parish and School, he initiated a new program for training altar servers. Many students from kindergarten to eighth grade have the opportunity to serve at school and Sunday Masses. Five students now serve at each Mass instead of three. The youngest students assist at the altar with the water and towel for the priest to wash his hands. Older students are candle and cross bearers. It is unique to observe the contrast between small students whose feet do not reach the floor sitting next to much taller, older students.

News anchor Mary Nickles' own breast cancer is a teaching tool for television viewers

SALT LAKE CITY — Mary Nickles, morning and noon anchor for KUTV Channel 2, broadcast her own mammogram in October to show viewers the importance of breast cancer screening, but the results saved her life. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and received a lumpectomy a week before Christmas.

  P: ¿Por qué los Obispos de los Estados Unidos patrocinaron esta conferencia?

R: Patrocinamos la conferencia porque nos pareció que sería muy importante para la agenda migratoria en nuestro país. Nos encontramos en un momento crucial los estados están proponiendo más y más leyes y el gobierno federal se está quedando paralizado, así es que consideramos que este era un buen momento para tener esta reunión. Queríamos saber qué es lo que está pasando a nivel estatal a lo largo y ancho de los Estados Unidos. Como son las leyes estatales, y como podemos lidiar con estas nuevas leyes Como es que vamos a poder ayudar a nuestros inmigrantes debido a estas nuevas leyes, o a pesar de ellas.
